Miss Meatface "SNAPSHOTS" book launch + artists reception

We're thrilled to host the artists reception for SNAPSHOTS, a stunning new fine art photography book by Kat Toronto (Miss Meatface) and her father Richard Toronto, shot in and around Vallejo and Northern California.

Captured on grainy 110 film during visits home to Northern California between 2022 and 2025, SNAPSHOTS mingles the bizarre and cinematic with the tender language of the family snapshot. It's an homage to a shared history — and to the landscape that shaped them both.

The event kicks off at Alibi Bookshop across the street for a book launch, signing & Q&A with Kat and Richard (1:30–2:45pm), then the party moves to The Exchange for the artists reception (3:00–5:00pm).

Free to attend — RSVP on Eventbrite!

Lit Nite with Kaleidoscope School, HOW TO READ AND WRITE A POEM
May

Lit Nite with Kaleidoscope School, HOW TO READ AND WRITE A POEM

Our second Lit Nite event is HOW TO READ & WRITE A POEM (Vision & Imagination in Theory & Practice). Together, we’ll explore how imagery, rhythm, sound, and structure create meaning beneath the surface of language, uncovering the hidden architecture that gives great poems their emotional and philosophical power.

From there, we’ll trace poetry’s evolution from classical verse and Romantic lyricism through modern spoken word, performance poetry, and hip-hop, exploring how cadence, improvisation, and voice continue to reinvent one of humanity’s oldest art forms.

Questions we’ll explore: How does poetry so often say what ordinary language cannot? How do rhythm and metaphor transform consciousness? What happens when language becomes incantation, prophecy, confession, or rebellion? And why, across thousands of years, have human beings continued to turn to poetry in moments of ecstasy, grief, revolution, and love?

The evening will culminate in playful creative exercises and shared performances inviting participants to experiment with their own poetic voices — whether you’re a lifelong reader of verse or someone who’s never written a poem before.

Lit Nights at THE EXCHANGE
Apr
23

Lit Nights at THE EXCHANGE

Presented by Kaleidoscope School

Skip the book club small talk. These aren’t your average reading group meetings - they’re part seminar, part salon, part theatrical experience, and entirely engaging.

Each month, we're hosting a two-hour deep dive into literature that matters. Facilitated by John and Christine Walker of Kaleidoscope, the evening will start off with a dramatic reading, followed by historical context, close reading, and the kind of wide-ranging conversation that goes places you don't expect - from aesthetics to politics to questions you didn't know you had about the human condition.

The series will kick off with THE HORROR STORY (The Revenge of Nature) starting with a reading of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" - an archetypal tale that helped define the modern horror tradition. From there, we’ll trace horror’s evolution: from Enlightenment cautionary tales designed to regulate the imagination, to 20th-century Cosmic Horror and its contemporary transformation into forms like Afrofuturism.

Questions we’ll explore: Why has horror so powerfully gripped the modern imagination? Is it therapeutic - a way of staging trauma? Are our monsters (vampires, zombies, witches, robots) manifestations of repressed social anxieties?
